BEECH (Fagus sylvatica)

General description
White to light brown in colour. Sometimes with red stripes or areas resembling heartwood. The wood is hard and uniform in structure. The weight is about 700 kgs/m3. Beech is a nervous species but this can be eliminated by steaming. Steaming enriches the wood giving it a darker rose/red colour. Beech is not durable and only suitable for indoor applications.

Main uses
Stairs, furniture, toys, flooring, packaging in food industry.

Remark
Beech is odourless and tasteless, which makes it an excellent species for toys and the food industry.
