PEAR (Pyrus communis)
Growing area
Europe.
General description
Pear is available in limited supplies as trees grown in orchards are too small. The main sources are farmyards and the forests. The nicest wood with a uniform rose colour, comes from Switzerland. Due to the nervous nature of the wood special care should be taken when drying and this must be done slowly. Twist is a common defect often to be found. It is often steamed to eliminate tension, this results in darker colour.
Main uses
Mainly furniture, carpentry, carvings and flooring. Often as veneer.
Remark
In the past Pear was boiled until black in colour to resemble Ebony, to be used in music instruments and knives.
