WENGÉ (Millettia laurentii)
Growing area
Tropical West Africa. Best area in the Congo basin.
General description
Heavy (about 850 kg/m3) and hard. Sought after for its dark brown to black colour. When logs are cut the colour is rather pale, but darkens rapidly. Medium to coarse texture and often with crossgrain. In spite of the hardness can contain large wormholes. Due to the hardness and crossgrain it has a tendency to splinter making it less easy to work with. Steaming contributes to a much darker colour.
Wengé’s “sister”, Panga Panga from the east coast of Africa, is in general wilder, more nervous and is more yellowish in colour.
Main uses
Stairs, furniture, carpentry and flooring.
